Product Description

An injectable drug sold under the brand names Novarel, Ovidrel and Pregnyl, Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that is used to boost fertility by increasing the production of sperm in men and promoting release of eggs in women. Myhep Tablets are also used for the treatment of conditions that are linked with sex hormones including undescended testicles and under developed sexual traits in girls. HCG can be categorized as a fertility drug and an endocrine drug depending upon its usage.

The drug was first approved in 1974 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Even though HCG is a prescription drug it is sometimes used to supplement weight loss. The over-the-counter sale of the drug is illegal as it is not approved by the FDA for weight loss purposes. It is clearly mentioned in the package insert that the drug is not beneficial for changing body fat composition, weight loss or decrease in appetite. The prescription labeling of the drug was recently updated by the FDA to include all allergic reactions, a few of which can be life threatening. HCG should not be used in case the patient is pregnant, is allergic to the constituents of HCG, is entering puberty before normal age, suffers from prostate cancer or any other cancer that has a direct link to male hormones.

Before consuming HCG, it is recommended that the doctor be informed about allergies, kidney disease, heart disease, ovarian cyst, seizures, asthma, migraines, etc. The drug should not be taken during pregnancy as it can lead to birth defects. The drug does have a few side effects that may or may not occur in a patient and entirely depend from one case to another. Some of the more common side effects include irritability, headaches,  fatigue, restlessness, depression, swollen hands, feet, lower legs and ankles, appearance of breasts in men and pain in area that received injection. Some of the more serious side effects of the drug include allergic reactions, multiple pregnancies, sooner than usual puberty, blood clots, swelling or rupture of ovaries, etc.
